The International Museum Day (IMD) is celebrated annually on May 18; It is organized since 1977 by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and aims to raise public awareness about the important role of museums and in the development of society. During the IMD the museums organize a lot of activities, taking place on the same May 18, but can also start earlier or end after that date. The most attractive events of IMD are the open days with free admission to the museums and the celebration of The Night of the Museums.

The 2022 edition of the International Museum Day

The motto of this year's edition is "The power of museums". In 2022, International Museum Day wants to explore the potential that museums have to bring about positive change in their communities. And it will do so by looking through three lenses:

  • Sustainability: Museums are strategic partners in the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and contribute to a wide variety of Goals, such as fostering the social economy and disseminating scientific information on environmental challenges.
  • Innovation in digitization and accessibility: Museums have become spaces for the development of new technologies applicable to everyday life. Digital innovation can help the public understand complex concepts.
  • Building Community Through Education: Through their collections and programs, museums contribute to building the community of an informed and engaged civil society and upholding democratic values.
