A film: "The Machinist"

El Maquinista - Brad Anderson

Brad Anderson's 2004 film set in California, but shot entirely in Barcelona and other towns in the province such as Badalona, Sant Adrià del Besòs, El Prat and Sabadell. From Barcelona you will recognize the famous Ferris wheel of the El Tibidabo amusement park. Other attractions also appear but with more appropriate names for the Californian setting, such as a terror train called Route 666. The film, produced in Spain and written by Scott Kosar, stars Christian Bale (who won the Best Actor award at the Festival. de Sitges), Jennifer Jason Leigh, John Sharian, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón and Michael Ironside.

Synopsis: Trevor Reznik (Christian Bale), who works in a factory, has suffered from complete insomnia for a year. The deterioration of his physical and mental condition caused by lack of sleep is such that his colleagues at the factory turn against him when one of them loses an arm in an incident in which Trevor is involved. Guilt comes and then paranoia that pushes Trevor to investigate the strange events around him, but the more he discovers, the less he wants to know.

The anecdotes of the film: Christian Bale lost 28 kilos to interpret the role of Trevor Reznik. Apparently, to achieve this, he only ate water, a cup of coffee without sugar and an apple or a can of tuna a day. The film's director, Brad Anderson, had a back problem during filming and directed most of the scenes from a stretcher.

A book: "La Plaça del Diamant (The pigeon girl)"

La Plaça del Diamant - Mercè Rodoreda

Considered by critics as the most important work of Mercè Rodoreda and one of the best Catalan post-war works, La Plaza del Diamante (1962) is a psychological novel that takes us to the Barcelona of the Second Republic, the civil war and the post-war period. Translated into more than thirty languages, the story revolves around Natalia (la Colometa) who accepts without protest everything that life and her first husband (Quimet) impose on her. But that we are not simply facing a post-war portrait is reflected in one of Natalia's sentences: "What happened to me was that I did not know very well why I was in the world".

Following in the footsteps of Natalia, Quimet and the rest of the characters to whom Rodoreda gave life with great success, you will tour the Gràcia quarter. In the pages of the novel, of course, the Plaça del Diamant appears, but also the squares of Virreina and Vila de Gràcia, Travessera de Gràcia, Mercat de la Llibertat and the streets of Tres Senyores, Verdi, Torrijos, Montseny and Gran de Gràcia.

And from the book to the big and small screen. Plaça del Diamant was brought to the cinema in 1982 by director Francesc Betriu. Sílvia Munt played the character of Natalia, the "Colometa" (and for this she obtained the Medal of the Circle of Cinematographic Writers for the best actress), and Lluís Homar a Quimet, the protagonist's first husband. The film was adapted to television in the form of a series of four chapters. You can see it for free on RTVE: Spanish version - Catalan version.
