The origins of the Sant Antoni Sunday Market

The origins of this weekly market are linked to that of the Fira de Bellcaire (Encantes), the largest market in Barcelona where everything is sold, and according to some versions, in 1882 it would have been located in the current location of the Sant Antoni Market. What we do know is that between 1920 and 1936, the Fira de Bellcaire moved to Avinguda del Paral·lel and that the Occasion Book Market was created there, which in 1931 already had more than 300 stalls dedicated to books. That same year the first group of stall owners was also created, whose objective was the specialization of the market for the exclusive sale of books. In 1936, the Mercat del Llibre d'Ocasió separated from the Fira de Bellcaire and settled in the Sant Antoni Market, from where it would no longer move. From its inception to the present, this book market has enjoyed great popular success and recognition from intellectuals.
