Mecal, the Barcelona International Short Film and Animation Festival will reach its 23rd edition in 2021. 322 high-quality short films from many countries will be screened at Mecal Pro. This year's edition is organized into several sections: the competition, the parallel sessions (shorts out of competition) and the parallel activities. The official competition section is divided, in turn, into five official sections: Animation (6 sessions), Oblique Animation (2 sessions), International (7 sessions), Oblique (3 sessions) and Documentary (5 sessions). This edition, which was to be a hybrid edition between online and witnessed, will be exclusively online. The shorts can be seen on the FILMIN and FesthomeTV platforms.

A great variety so that everyone has at least one option: Trash Anim, Horror, Sci-Fi, Women cheerleaders from Eastern countries, Comedy, Children, Young Audiences, Spanish Talents, Catalan Talents, German Talents, Swiss Talents, Womart , Quebecois Talents, Erotic Short Films, Go Green, Immigration, LGBTIQ +, Trans, Black lives matter, Shitty trilogy, Sex addictions: retrospective of Jan Soldat, Festinet, Barcelona Film Schools and Plançó: contest of animation pieces from Catalan schools .

Parallel activities

The festival has also prepared various activities that will take place at Zoom. There will be workshops, conferences and master classes. One of the most interesting activities will be on March 27, in which Javier Roca, supervisor of The Mandalorian series, will give a class on the future of special effects based on the aforementioned series. The festival is also an excellent meeting point for new directors or small producers to create a network of contacts.

Mecal, the International Festival of Short Films and Animation of Barcelona arrives in 2019 at its 21st edition. In Mecal Pro more than 350 short films of great quality will be screened, from more than 40 different countries. This year's edition is organized into several sections: competition, parallel sessions (short films out of competition) and parallel activities. In this edition there are five spaces in which the short films are screened and in which the parallel activities are developed: Arts Santa Mònica, Movistar Center, MACBA, Institut Français and Ocaña).

In the parallel sections of the Mecal they will show us the already classic ones of the festival: Guest Country (Estonia), Special Terror, Golden Shower (Special Sex), Spanish Talents and Catalan Talents; and the Womart section, dedicated to the female universe. But there will be more, for all tastes and, some, for all audiences: Sci-Fi, Young Public, Children, Go Green, Comedy, New Ways To ..., Boxing, Immigration, Trans and Religious Fervor. This in regard to Fiction. The Animation and Documentary contest sections also offer sections and parallel activities.

Parallel activities

Parallel activities include the Battle of programmers, in which two professionals from the world of short films show the public a selection of works for attendees to decide, with their shouts and aplaudiments, who of the two has offered the most interesting selection; the Short Film Market (a meeting place for creators, buyers and distributors), Pitching Coaching (to improve the presentation techniques of audiovisual projects), Crowfunding Coaching - Verkami (how to prepare a micro-financing project) and Schools of Cinema of Barcelona (in the Dia de les Escoles of the Mecal, the best short films of the film and audiovisual schools of Barcelona are screened, and there will be a prize awarded by the public).

Filmin, the best streming cinema platform in Spain, has a permanent space dedicated to Mecal. Filmin has been collaborating for years with Mecal, awarding the Filmin Oblique prize for the best short film in this section. Both are specialized in the diffusion of independent, young and quality films. Each short film can be viewed for less than one euro, unless you are a subscriber, because in that case you will have free access to the entire program.
