El Corte Inglés

A small shop on Preciados street in Madrid founded in 1980. That was the germ of this company that today is the icon of department stores in Spain. At the beginning it was dedicated to tailoring for children, but the interesting thing is that this small shop gave rise to the two most important department store chains in the country: Galerías Preciados and El Corte Inglés. An Asturian, Pepín Fernández teamed up with his cousin César Rodríguez González. Pepín realized the good situation of the El Corte Inglés store and wanted to expand his textile business by buying all the buildings in the block where the small store was. His idea: build a new building. He got it. Galerías Preciados was born. But attention, previously César asked Pepín to hire his nephew, Ramón Areces, in his company. Pepín refused and César asked him to at least give him the little shop, that is, El Corte Inglés. It was the year 1935. Sixty years later, in 1995, The El Corte Inglés bought Galerías Preciados. Currently, counting the El Corte Inglés outlets and not counting the stores of other companies of the group such as Hipercor or Supercor, El Corte Inglés has 142 sales centers in Spain and Portugal.
