The birth of the Jamboree, a gathering of tribes

In 1960, businessman Joan Rosselló turned the Bar Brindis into a Jazz music bar and changed its name. At the proposal of the critic Javier Coma, he chose Jamboree as its name, which in the Zulu language means a gathering of tribes. Jamboree is also the word that the Scout movement adopted to name its meetings. Initially, the sessions of the Jubilée Jazz Club, a pioneer entity in the dissemination of jazz in Barcelona, were included in the Jamboree. From 1960 to 1968, the cellar of the Plaza Reial got Barcelona to enter the tour circuit of the great jazz stars, and became famous among the intellectuals and sailors of the VI United States Fleet that often docked in Barcelona. And who performed during those years? Bill Coleman, Kenny Drew, Chet Baker, Ponny Poindexter, Art Farmer, Lou Bennet, Stéphane Grappelli, Kenny Clarke, Ornette Coleman, René Thomas and Dexter Gordon. Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington performed in the "Palau de la Música" on the initiative of the Jamboree.
