Inter Milan, better known as Inter, was founded in 1908 under the name of Foot-Ball Club Internazionale. Inter is the second team with the most Italian football titles (18 leagues, 7 cups and 5 supercups), has managed to proclaim itself three times champion of the UEFA Cup and the European Cup / UEFA Champions League (1963/1964, 1964/1965 and 2009/2010), and has won two Intercontinental Cups and a FIFA Club World Cup. It is the only team that has participated in all editions of Serie A (the highest category in Italy), and is also the only Italian team that has won a triplet in the same season (champion of Serie A, Italian Cup and League UEFA Champions) in the 2009/10 season, and five titles (adding the Italian Super Cup and the Club World Cup) in the 2010/2012 season.

According to the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS), Inter Milan is the third best Italian team and sixth best in Europe of the 20th century, and the best Italian club and the fifth best in European football of the 21st century. According to the IFFHS annual club classification, Inter has been the best soccer team in the world in 1998 and 2010.

The last time that FC Barcelona and Inter Milan faced each other was in the Champions League group stage last season (2018/2019). The match played at Giuseppe Meazza ended in a draw (1-1, with Malcom's goal for FC Barcelona and Mauro Icardi for Inter) and in the match played at Camp Nou Barça won 2-0 with goals by Luis Suárez and Ivan Rakitić. The next time that FC Barcelona and Inter Milan met at Camp Nou was in the semifinals of the Champions League on April 28, 2010. On that occasion Barça won the match 1-0 with a goal from Gerard Piqué almost at the end of the game, but it was not enough to overcome 3-1 of the first leg at Giusseppe Meazza. Inter reached the final and beat Bayern Munich, winning their third and final European Cup.
