Der Eindruck von außen auf die Basilika Santa Maria del Mar (1329-1383) vermittelt einen kompakten Baukörper, was aber nicht übereinstimmt, mit dem was wir im Inneren finden. Sie ist der treueste Vertreter des strengen Stils der katalanischen Gotik und wurde lange als die Kathedrale der Seeleuten betrachtet. Und kein Wunder, die Gemeinde des Hafengebietes und dem Ribera Viertel, waren diejenigen,die mit ihrem Geld und ihrer harten Arbeit dazu beigetragen haben. Offenbar beteiligte sich die gesamte Bevölkerung des Ribera Viertels am Bau und vor allem auch die Hafenarbeiter, die “Galafates” de la Ribera oder “Bastaixos” genannt wurden, und aus diesem Grund wurde dieser Einsatz lobend auf der Haupttür der Basilika erwähnt.
Die Santa Maria del Mar hat mehrere Katastrophen erlitten: Im Jahr 1379, als die vierte Tranche der Gewölbe fast fertiggestellt war, fingen die Gerüste Feuer und auch die Steine erlitten einen erheblichen Schaden. Später im Jahr 1428 kam es durch ein Erdbeben zum Zusammenbruch der Fensterrose, wodurch einige Todesfälle verursacht wurden. Und schließlich gab es ein Feuer am 3. und 4. August 1936 durch Anarchisten und Kommunisten verursacht, die den Tempel gestürmt hatten (wie auch andere Kirchen in Barcelona).
Im Jahr 1923 erhielt die Kirche den Titel Basilica minor, verliehen von Papst Pius XI.

You don't need to pay to go to a mass, nor the one of the Gallo (Christmas eve). Regarding the time, keep in mind that before the mass, El Canto de la Sibila, a medieval piece of religious theater, is performed. Normally, El Canto de la Sibila starts at 7:30 pm and the Misa del Gallo at 8:00 pm.

At the moment we do not have information about the Easter masses in the Basilica of Santa del Mar. On April 2 the blessing of Ramos is scheduled to be celebrated (11:45 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.) and on April 7 rl Stations of the Cross (10:00 a.m.).

At the moment there is no concert scheduled for the dates indicated. Concerts are usually organized intermittently but several days a month, in another nearby church, the Basilica of Santa María del Pi. Stay tuned for our events section.
