The Casa Vicens (1883-1888), a private house, was built between 1883 and 1888 for the ceramics industrialist Manuel Vicens i Montaner at 24 Carrer de les Carolines. One of Gaudí's early works, the building's structure is still dominated by straight lines. The decorative tiles and fanciful turrets show ideas that Gaudí would not cease to cultivate. When it was built it was not yet in Barcelona because the Gràcia district at that time was an independent city.
The Casa Vicens belongs to the orientalist stage of Gaudí, a period in which the Catalan genius was inspired by the art of the Near and Far East (India, Persia and Japan), and in the Hispanic Islamic art. The building was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1969 and a World Heritage Site in 2005.
The visit to this work by Gaudí is a perfect start or end of the visit to the Gràcia quarter. It is an encounter, a discovery. You enter the street de les Carolines, it seems that it will be another street and suddenly the Casa Vicens appears.
