Els Quatre Gats ist a bar and restaurant (1895-1896) designed by the modernist architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch and decorated with paintings of the Catalan artists who met here at the turn of the century. A favourite haunt of Picasso who held an exhibition here. The influence that the Germanic Gothic had on Josep Puig i Cadafalch is evident in the Casa Martí, a Neo-Gothic style construction, with many modernist ornamental elements. The building is part of the register of Cultural Assets of National Interest of the Catalan heritage and of the registry of Assets of Cultural Interest of the Spanish heritage.
Els Quatre Gats, film set
This emblematic bar restaurant in Barcelona was chosen by film director Woody Allen to shoot several scenes from his film "Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona". In Els Quatre Gats takes place one of the main scenes of the film.
The origin of the name
Els Quatre Gats was a space for gatherings, dinners and art meetings that was inspired by the cabaret Le Chat Noir ("the black cat") in Paris. By including the word cats in his name he paid homage to the Parisian place and added the meaning of the expression four cats; that is, few people. Maybe because they did not expect many people to come to the place!
To visit the interior of Els Quatre Gats you will have to go to eat or have a drink. In any case it is worth doing. And if you go at night, remember that they have live music
