Centennial shops in Barcelona: History and Tradition

Although some hundred-year-old shops in the city have already seen a better life,  Barcelona is fortunate to have emblematic establishments, located in historic buildings, now run by other generations of the founding families.  

In addition to preserving their most traditional trait, they have been able to adapt to the new times and offer artisan products, always different and worth knowing it. The centennial businesses of the city have a distinctive plaque at the entrance, which catalogs them as unique and important shops, from the historical, commercial and patrimonial point of view of the city.

Joyería Bagués Masriera

Bagués MasrieraSince 1915, Bagués-Masriera is located in a large and beautiful modernist building (Casa Amatller) of Paseo de Gràcia. A unique situation that positions this shop as a high-end international jewelry, and a place included in the routes for tourists to visit. It is no coincidence that its jewels offer symbolism of Barcelona, because a good part of its collections is inspired in it, where the colorful flashes of the artistic avant-gardes and the artisan tradition abound. Proof of this is that its workshop is one of the few in the world in which is used the technique of translucent enamel and in which enamel is fired.

Peletería La Sibèria

Peletería La SibèriaIn one of the most famous corners of the city, in Rambla Cataluña, dressing up the store window of La Sibèria is a tradition. The shop is from 1891, and offers a cutting-edge interior, with white colors and noucentista decoration. It stands out for its prêt-à-porter service and tailor-made clothing, and offers high quality fur, ante, nappa and doubleface. Its owners are already the fourth generation of the saga of furriers who founded it and, although the innovation is a fact, they continue contributing that value of tailor made, impeccable and with perfect fit.

Unión Suiza

Unión SuizaThe jewelery tradition of Barcelona is extensive. In this case, Union Switzerland, founded in 1840, is one of the most prestigious jewelry stores in the city by offering an important collection where watches are usually some of the most outstanding objects. From its origins, where Jaume Vendrell and Francisca Castellà established a jewelery shop and workshop on their own, several generations of the family have taken over the business. The store, which also sells online, has brands such as Breguet, Panerai or Mikimoto, all of them exclusive brands.

El Rei de la Màgia

El Rei de la MàgiaEnigmatic and mysterious. It is really one of the most surprising establishments in the city. In Princesa Street, the store, which has been operating since 1881, was founded by Joaquim Partagàs as a shop specializing in magic products. The current owners, since 1984, Josep Mª Martínez and Rosa M. Llop have been able to promote the only space dedicated entirely to the illusions of Barcelona. Although it was said that the store was going to close, it has not been so and in Junqueras street even has a theater museum. The museum collection faithfully reflects what is in the store and has grown thanks to donations and acquisitions.

Casa Beethoven

Casa BeethovenOn La Rambla, this store is the favorite for music lovers. Casa Beethoven has been at the service of music and musicians since the year 1880. In it we can find from musical scores and musical complements,  instruments and music books. It is a jewel in the middle of the city.

Laguarda Joiers

This shop, specialized in jewelry, is the only one left on La Rambla. The first store, now 100 years old, opened in Travessera de Gràcia, and then moved to the emblematic Ramblas. Its philosophy is based on the design and sale of jewelry, with its own workshop, and in addition the sale of watches. The friendly and impeccable service was the reason that it has survived, and is run by the fourth generation of the Laguarda family.
