The Funiculars of Barcelona

Within the transport classified as peculiar and antique we find the funiculars. In Barcelona, we present here three of them:

The funicular of Vallvidrera

It dates from 1906 and was opened to connect and communicate the Sarria quarter with the village of Vallvidrera, now belonging to Barcelona. Over the years it has been modernized thanks to the renovation of 1998, with a new automatic system allowing to make about 10 round trips a day. In addition it will leave you at the foot of the Collserola Park.


  • Weekdays: Monday to Thursday: 04:46 am - 12:20 am / Friday and holiday eve: 04:46 am - 02:30 am.
  • Saturday, Sunday and holidays: Sunday and working days eves: 05:36 h - 00:47 h / Saturdays and holidays before holiday: 05:36 h - 02:30 h.
  • Working days of the month of August (first and last week): working days before working day: 04:46 h - 00:47 h / Working days, Saturday or holiday eve: 04:46 h - 02: 30h.

Funicular Tibidado Barcelona

The funicular of the Tibidabo

Below you can read the description of what was the funicular of the Tibidabo. Right now it is being completely remodeled to become another attraction of the Tibidabo Amusement Park that will be called "Cuca de Llum" (firefly). The new attraction / funicular is scheduled to start operating in August 2020.

This is another transport of such characteristics. Opened in 1901, connects the Plaça del Doctor Andreu with the Tramvia Blau, the Tibidabo mountain, the famous amusement park, and the Temple Expiatorio del Sagrado Corazón. Fantastic views of the city and its mountains. To get there, you can take the bus 196 or the beautiful Tramvia Blau. This tram opens 15 minutes before the opening of the Camí del Cel and until 30 minutes after the closing of the Camí del Cel or the Tibidabo Amusement Park,  you need to know it, so you can avoid to be without transportation once you are in the park.

Funicular Montjuïc BarcelonaThe funicular of Montjuïc

Montjuïc funicular is in the other mountain of Barcelona, and was built in 1928, on the occasion of the Universal Exhibition of Barcelona and precisely, to link the city with the mountain. When the cable car was built, it was closed, but in 1992, reopened only the lower section, and ten years ago new renovations were made. It is connected to the underground network of the city, in the Paral·lel station, and the other station is Parc de Montjuïc where it connects with the famous cable car. Its maximum speed is 36 km / h (10 m / s).


  • Autumn-winter: Weekdays, Monday to Friday 7:30 am - 8:00 pm / Saturday, Sunday and holidays: 9:00 am - 8:00 pm.
  • Spring-Summer: Weekdays, Monday to Friday 7:30 am - 10:00 pm / Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 9:00 am - 10:00 pm.


The price of a single ticket for the Funicular de Montjuïc and Vallvidrera is 2.40 € (2020 rate). Both are included in the integrated transport cards as the T-casual and T-usual
