How to move with the bike in Barcelona

The bike lanes (Los carriles bici)

Barcelona is one of the Spanish cities with a great number of bicycles. The net of the cycle paths of Barcelona is about 120 km and it is planned to increase it to 140 km in the next years. The cycle paths in Barcelona are marked by a white lines. There are some cycle paths on the sidewalks, like for example the one along the whole beach of Barcelona and another one in the city, in the Provença street.

The bike and other transport systems

For longer distances or if you want to use the bicycle outside of Barcelona, it is necessary to know whether it is allowed to transport the bike in the public transport system and the conditions.

Metro

Times at which it is permitted to take bikes on trains:
Working days: from 5:00 to 6:30, from 9:30 to 16:30 and from 20:30 until the last train.
Weekends and public holidays: All day.
During July and August: All day.

Bikes can be carried at the ends of the carriages. On Line 2 there are special areas for bikes.

Conditions:The transport company reserves the right to not allow passengers to travel with bikes if there is a justified reason to do so. Minimum age: 14.
One bicycle per person is permitted, and it is carried under the responsibility of the cyclist.

Montjuïc funicular railway:

Bicycles can be carried throughout the day.

RENFE

Trains, suburban lines (Cercanías):

Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays it is allowed to carry the bike during the whole day and from Monday until Friday between 10.00h and 15.00h. Bicycles can be carried as long as the train isn't crowded. If the train fills up, bike carriers may be asked to get off (depending on the criteria of the guard)

Regional trains:

Bikes can be carried on all regional trains: In the guard's van if there is one (there are guard's vans on all "Catalunya Exprés" trains, and on some "Delta" and "Regional" trains), hung from the hooks, or at the end of the carriage if the train isn't too crowded (under the same conditions as Rodalies trains).

For groups of more than 5 people a permit must be requested from Sants Station. It can be sent by fax. Gerència de Regionals (Regional Train Management). Tel. 93 495 60 60.

Ferrocarriles de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC)(Catalonia's public rail network).

Bikes can be carried on all trains at any time.
Some trains have specific areas for carrying bikes.
The company reserves the right to not accept bicycles if trains are very full (according to the criteria of the guard).

Vallvidrera funicular train:

Bikes can be carried on all trains at any time.

Ferries

The company Transmediterranea, which runs ferries to the Balearic Islands, carries bicycles free of charge. The company can be consulted for information regarding the conditions.
